I watched a very interesting documentary yesterday called Moving Midway about, well, moving Midway plantation to a new location near Raleigh, North Carolina. There is an article about the documentary here. The story touches on so many things–family, slavery, Southern tradition, urban sprawl.
Late in the documentary, after the house (and buildings) have been moved and the house has been renovated, its current owner, Charlie Silver, is giving a tour of the house to his aunt. He points out a yo-yo quilt on a bed and tells her that it was purchased in Pennslvania and is more than 100 years old. To which his aunt replies, “Yankee quilt.”
I had to laugh.
