Size does matter

I’m so pleased to be able to join in Pat Sloan’s “The Edge” blog hop celebrating her new Edge rulers! BUT, when I found out I’d be sharing the blog hop day with THE PAMKITTYMORNING and THE HAPPY ZOMBIE?!?!?! Can you imagine my glee?

I’m not sure Pat knew what she was in for.

Maybe Pat didn’t realize that we are AMP-ed about measuring! So we became Team AMP-ed and set about to show you that yes, indeedy, size does matter. We hit the road to measure the immeasureable (?), to compare and contrast the size of major landmarks, to take Pat’s rulers where they have never gone before! AMP-ed, I tell ya!

First off, my crack measuring team (Team Tiny AMP?), hit the city streets.

They totally got into the “spirit” of measuring. That’s the “Spirit of Detroit” statue, dontcha know.

Then they made their way into the middle of the street to meet Joe Louis and take the measure of the man.

Size matters! I’m getting out of the way of that man’s fist.

Next, they got a measure of the local economy.

Yeah, that’s the GM headquarters. I’m not sure that size is an accurate reading there.

All of that measuring made Tiny Team AMP hungry.

So they had to stop in to American Coney Island for a little refreshment.

And then they just took a picture of an immeasurably cute girl:

Well, because she’s cute.

Then Tiny Team AMP-ed 2 went back out on the road to get the measure of some fun and games.

First, we had to measure how much time we had.

Good, plenty of time before our ride wrist bands expire!

First we took on the Super Slide.

That was a measure of fun, BUT, the biggest winner on the midway?

Definitely the Skywheel!

Makes the Super Slide look absolutely puny. We confirmed that size definitely does matter when it comes to fun!

Finally, we took the ruler out into the wilds to see what we would find. What, ho? Giant marshmallows?

Well, OK, not really.

After putting Pat’s rulers through their measuring paces, we can say that other rulers just don’t measure up like Pat’s!

While the Team AMP-ed measuring feats were fun, Pat asked us to share our first quilting experiences.

I can’t show you my very first quilt because it died a slow, shred-dy death. I will tell you it was all solids in peach, brown, red, blue and green and it was a quilt-as-you-go log cabin from an Eleanor Burns’ book. I took a class through our local recreation program back in about 1993. I thought it was great and was having a lot of fun until it came time to figure out how to attach a backing to the thing. I believe I decided at that point, so early on in my quilting career, NEVER to quilt-as-I-went again. I’ve pretty much stuck to that. Although I have quilted-as-I’ve-appliqued a number of times.

The closest living relative to my first machine-done quilt is this one:

The venerable four-patch on point. Do you see the rebel yell in the quilt? I went against the grain, so to speak, and wanted to put a color in the setting squares. I took this class at a local shop and caused trouble from the start. I think the next quilt project was a small trip around the world (I believe I am still handquilting that one…). The one after that was a heinous elongated nine-patch with heavy use of tea dyed muslin and lipstick coral.

And, look, here’s my first rotary cutter:

I believe it still has its original blade. Ah, well. It got me on the road to much quilting mischief. The rest, as they say, is history and stuff I haven’t done yet.

Finally, Pat asked us to share a recipe. I’m going to share two because they are on my mind these days what with the change in seasons.

I start making this one around December.

Horseradish-Olive-Cheese Spread

2 – 8 oz. lite cream cheese
2/3 C. chopped green olives
2 Tbsp. horseradish
1/2 C. grated parmesan cheese

Mix together well. Chill. Seems to be best with stoned wheat crackers. yum yum

And I do believe vegetable roasting season has begun. This makes the house smell amazing!

Tomato Vegetable Casserole
(Recipe originally from Giada De Laurentiis)

1 medium potato, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 medium yam, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 red bell pepper, seeded and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
2 carrots, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
5 tablespoons olive oil
1 red onion, thinly sliced into rings
2 small or 1 large zucchini, cut crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick pieces
Salt and pepper
2 large ripe tomatoes, cut crosswise into 1/4-inch thick slices
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
2 tablespoons dried Italian-style bread crumbs
Fresh basil sprigs, for garnish

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Toss the potato, yam, bell pepper, carrots, and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a 13 by 9 by 2-inch baking dish to coat. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and toss until coated. Spread vegetables evenly over the bottom of the pan.

Arrange the onion slices evenly over the vegetable mixture. Arrange the zucchini over the onion. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons of oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Arrange the tomato slices over the zucchini.

Stir the Parmesan and bread crumbs in a small bowl to blend. Sprinkle the Parmesan bread crumbs over the vegetables in the baking dish. Drizzle with the last tablespoon of olive oil.

Bake uncovered until the vegetables are tender, and the topping is golden brown, about 40 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil sprigs, if desired.

OK, now I’m starving. I’m going to have to go eat something now.

Anyhoo, if you’ve stuck around through the measuring antics, first quilt and recipes, you deserve a prize! And someone’s going to win an entire set of Pat’s new rulers.

To be entered to win the set, you must comment on ALL of the ruler blog hop posts. Comments will be open through Sunday.

In addition, I’m giving away a fat quarter set of Color Theory by Sandra Banava:

Sneaking off

We snuck off for the weekend.

While grown-ups talked about boring things, someone kept sneaking off.

Surveillance camera:

Yes, I know you’ve got a pocket full of quarters and you’re placing your bets.

I probably used to do the same thing. But I’m sure I didn’t have as many quarters in my pocket as she did.

Good thing the rides didn’t shake any quarters out of her.

Up, up and away!

Down here on earth, I’ve been adding feathers to Mr. Owl and prepping a pile of these:

Just a few more to add to the pile.

Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for my stop on Pat Sloan’s “The Edge” blog hop. I think it will be an extensive post…

In the meantime, be sure to check out the other blog hop stops where you’ll hear about first quilts, get some yummy recipes and much more!

From little things

You have heard, haven’t you? I heard the champagne corks popping a hemisphere away. Sarah’s new fabric collection from Lecien, From Little Things, arrived at her house recently. It will debut at fall quilt market and be available in stores in by late winter/early spring 2011. It’s gorgeous and fun and fresh and whimsical and pretty and dotty and stripe-y and birdy and flower-y — you know, all of those things we love. Well, say, you can WIN some of it before it even hits the wholesale market aisles in Houston. Go on over now and get yourself entered!

Congrats, Miss Sarah — From Little Things is divine!

Don’t mind me, just drooling over fabric on the screen and plotting and scheming over here.  heh heh heh

Also a little bit of sewing this week.

I’m making Rachel Griffith’s Coin Collecting quilt from the July/August Quiltmaker mag.

Oh dear, you should really clickety-click over to Rachel’s blog and see her latest outstanding creation. Much cuter than ANY quilt, I must say.

And I’m finally starting a little Halloween project…barely scratched the surface here but something done is better than nothing done…

This one will be owl-involved also. Shhhh, I can’t say that too loud in this house. The owl obsessed might hear me…

Speaking of obsessed, I made two more lemon ginger peach cakes today. And obsessively listened to the Avett Brothers while making them. Hmm, I guess the obsessed apple doesn’t fall far from the obsessed tree.

Enjoy the weekend!

Lesson learned

Oh, you poor, poor zinnias. Trying to mind your own pretty little business until some moron planted morning glories in the same patch of dirt.

Witness:

The morning glories took down the zinnias like a pack of hungry lions on a poor thirsty elephant in the night (yes, I watched the Earth DVD recently).  It’s a shame, really.  AND the ferocious attack morning glories haven’t even had many blooms (unlike the less sturdy ones in the pots — that’s right, there are more). No redeeming features, if you ask me. I’d better just let go of summer and rip the whole mess out now. I have a feeling we’ll be revisiting this scene next summer…

Things are less than chipper over here. General malaise and crabbiness caused by common everyday irritants. I’m blaming the dogs a lot because they bark at EVERYLASTTHING. And me and my sewing machine are not on the best of terms right now.  If I was the boss and the sewing machine was my employee, I would fire the sewing machine for not doing its job. You know, the job it went to college for and learned how to do (and somehow I paid the tuition). It tried my patience all day today and when the whole tension thing and walking foot thing were too much for it, I cut it some slack and asked it to hem a light cotton hand towel.  Instead of that, dear daughter has a new cloth napkin because I gave up and cut off the offending mess. I swear. Between the steamless steam iron and the sewing machine, things are not blissful in the sewing room.

Let’s change direction, shall we? I do have this lovely item:

A corner of a needlepoint canvas of Sue Spargo’s Inkberry design by Patty Bommarito of Patty Paints.

No, I’ve never needlepointed in my life. It’s never too late to learn, right?

The needlepoint canvas is a bright spot. Oh, and the squirrels are making me laugh these days. So. Very. BUSY!

Hope you’re chipper!

PC

Peach cake!

It’s actually Lemon Ginger Peach Cake. My peaches didn’t sink to the bottom though. This cake smells AMAZING when it’s baking. AMAZING!

I made two. Oh, and I snuck a little bit of cardamom in the recipe.

Stop it, I’m drooling!

Pretty cloth!

A bit of stash enhancement from Kathy at Pink Chalk Fabrics.

Look how well the Farmdale roosters go with one of Kathy’s fat quarter sets:

Which leads me to believe that the rest of this Farmdale colorway will go with it as well.

But I had to get a little piece of the apples in pink:

A little more pretty cloth from Jackie at Canton Village Quiltworks

Pretty cloth!

Speaking of which, these strip sets of other pretty cloth aren’t going to sew themselves…

One-third more strip sets to go.

Have a PC weekend!

Today’s crop

Yeah, you’re making me nervous about the impending morning glory takeover. I’ve been considering other “gardens” around the neighborhood. I’d admired the morning glories. And then I saw a fence that had been wrapped fiercely in the little buggers. I’ll have to keep ours in check — haven’t let them go up on the porch roof at least. Until the takeover, I’ll continue to enjoy the day’s crop because it is an ever-changing scene.

And here’s today’s crop of sewing:

I must say, the shot cottons paper pieced like a DREAM! It was quite thrilling to see how nicely they fell flat at the seams!

The girl who…

The girl who went back to school.

The girl who finished her summer reading.

(Took me long enough. Hey, look, I made the cover of that book!)

The girl who finished her Doll Quilt Swap 9 quilt.

The girl who is happy about these things.

Surprise!

I generally don’t like surprises.

But I am enjoying the surprise of these morning glories each day.

We generally dump a bunch of seeds in front of the house each summer.

Vines were creeping up the porch.

I forgot we even planted morning glory seeds.
